Child Care

Did you know that the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA is the #1 child care provider in the towns of Southington and Cheshire, and that each day the YMCA's dedicated child care staff serves more than 500 children, developing nurturing relationships and giving positive guidance to children from age 3 to 12? In addition we offer dozens of child care services for children ages 2 through 10. Each program is specifically designed to bring out the best in your child and geared for their age level.

Most importantly, our child care programs:

  • Provide the highest quality care for the portion of the day when parents cannot be with their children.
  • Help children develop to their fullest potential.
  • Provide a safe and positive environment.
  • Teach, model, celebrate, praise and reinforce the four core values of character development...caring, honesty, respect and responsibility as well as confront inconsistencies.

Creative Child

This exciting program keeps your child very busy! Each class features structured swimming, arts and crafts, gym play, story time, music and more. The program is for children who are three to five years old, or who will be three years old by December 31, 2008. Children must be completely toilet trained and out of pull ups to attend this class. Pre-School Enrichment Classes

Also offered at the YMCA are many classes for children ages 1-6 years. Some classes are with parents or grandparents and some are not. Class times range in length from 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours long. They meet one or two days per week. Emphasis in many areas include a cooking, music, gross motor and fine motor skills, literature, painting, games, etc. Children do not need to be toilet trained for most of these classes. Nursery School

Age: 3 to 5 years
The YMCA popular Nursery School program brings learning and fun together. Your child will enjoy a structured environment that offers arts & crafts, field trips, recreational play, songs, special events, stories and swimming. Our licensed program provides children with age-appropriate learning activities in a secure and stimulating environment. Children must be fully toilet trained and out of pull-ups to participate in the Nursery School program.


Preschool

Age: 3 to 5 years
Our full-day, Preschool program fosters growth and development by providing a balance of activities that encourage physical and intellectual development while guiding positive social and emotional attitudes. In the YMCA Preschool, children learn through a center-based learning system and the Creative Curriculum for Preschoolers in a secure and stimulating environment. Developmentally appropriate activities include arts, field trips, literacy, mathematics, science, swim days and outdoor/indoor play. Certified, caring and professional teachers make this an exciting place for children to grow. Children must be fully toilet trained and out of pull-ups to participate in the Preschool program.

With our M-F schedule option, families receive a full, family membership to our YMCA. 5:30-6:00 pm extended care option available


Half-Day Pre K

Age: 4 years by December 31, 2007
We have designed our new kindergarten readiness program to help your child build the skills necessary for a successful school experience. With all of the benefits of a traditional nursery school day, our new five day a week program will help your child masterskills such as independence, responsibility, reading, writing letters and words, using numbers, counting and becoming familiar with classroom routines. Skills will be taught through a center-based learning system and the Creative Curriculum for Preschoolers which is in line with the State of Connecticut ’s Preschool Benchmarks. Children must be four years old by December 31, 2007 and fully toilet trained and out of pull-ups to enroll in the Half-Day Pre K program.


School-Age & Club Y Programs

Grades: 1 to 5
We offer a structured, activity-based program using the YMCA of the USA School-Age curriculum framework for a variety of enriching activities.

Our program provides:

  • A stimulating environment promoting spiritual, physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.
  • An opportunity for children to have fun, make new friends, learn, grow and develop
  • A safe supervised environment that is licensed through the State of Connecticut .
  • An accommodating schedule that includes half days and delayed openings.
  • Activities that include are well balanced and include: sports, arts & crafts, quiet games, science projects, group games, international activities, homework time, indoor or outdoor creative free play, service learning projects and a variety of clubs.
  • YMCA character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Grades: 6 to 8
DePaolo and Kennedy Middle School participants meet at the Southington Community YMCA each day after school Club Y is more than just your traditional after-school program. It is designed with middle school students in mind. The club atmosphere is intended to:

  • foster accountability, independence, and leadership
  • YMCA character values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • allows for personal growth, encourages group participation, teach healthy lifestyles and provides structured activities to instill healthy habits for your teen.

Before School Program Locations

• DePaolo, Flanders , Hatton, Kelley, Kennedy, Plantsville, South End and Thalberg School participants attend the YMCA Before School program at the Y’s 29 High Street facility. Students are transported by school bus to their school each morning.

• Derynoski and Strong School participants attend the YMCA Before School program at Derynoski Elementary School . Strong School students are transported by school bus to school each morning.

After School Program Locations

• Derynoski, Flanders , Hatton, Kelley, Strong & Thalberg School participants stay at their

respective school for the YMCA After School program.

• Plantsville, South End, St. Thomas and St. Dominic’s School participants attend the YMCA After School program at the Y’s 29 High Street facility. Children who require transportation to the YMCA After School program are transported by school bus from their school to the YMCA.

• DePaolo and Kennedy Middle School participants attend the YMCA Club Y program at the Y‘s Teen Center, 29 High Street. Transportation is provided for those students participating in the program by school bus from their school to the YMCA.


KinderPals

Grade: Kindergarten
Our KinderPals program provides additional opportunities for arts, dramatic play, cooking projects, field trips, music, recreational play and socialization during the part of the day that your child is not in school. Energetic and professional staff design this structured program to meet the unique needs of your developing Kindergarten student.

With our ALL DAY schedule option, families receive a full, family membership to our YMCA.
5:30-6:00 pm extended care option available


Vacation Fun Days

We're here for you during school holidays. Participants must sign up at the Membership Services desk. Fun Days are for Grades K-8.

2008 YMCA Camp Naciwonki

Children entering K-3
NEW – One week sessions!!!

YMCA Camp Naciwonki is our summer camp experience designed for children entering Kindergarten-third grade who enjoy the comfort of a less intimidating atmosphere. Our YMCA Camp Naciwonki experience starts in the YMCA Learning Center and uses the pool, gym and other activity rooms at the YMCA. Activities include a structured swim lesson, arts & crafts, science experiments, messy-hands projects, indoor and outdoor games, weekly field trip or events, snack time and much more. Imagineers Camp (Children 3-5 yrs)

A new and exciting component of YMCA Camp Naciwonki! Our Imagineers Camp offers children a mini-camp experience with socialization, learning and fun! Our one-week sessions will keep preschoolers busy with age-appropriate theme weeks, craft activities, story time, science experiments, messy-hands projects, songs, dramatic play and much more! This experience is offered to children that are 100% potty trained, out of pull-ups and free from consistent accidents and for children of preschool age, not entering Kindergarten. Preschool

The Cheshire Community YMCA child care program provides a fun, safe, and healthy environment, under the care of our qualified staff, for children of working parents. This year-round program is held at the Cheshire YMCA. Call for space availability. All participants must be YMCA members. Call Chrissy Cassesse at 203-272-3150.


Busy Bee Nursery School

Boys and Girls ages 3 to 5
Our teacher, Mrs. Deluca, prepares a creative and unique curriculum. Activities include outdoor and indoor play, fine and gross motor skill development, crafts, gym activities, story time, circle time, field trips, and special days. Held at the Cheshire Community YMCA, call Chrissy Cassesse for more information at 203-272-3150. Limited space is available, call for availability.


YMCA School Age Before Care

Boys and Girls grades 1 to 6
The Cheshire Community YMCA provides before school care for two elementary schools, Highland and Norton. This program is held at Highland School for Highland students and at the Cheshire Community YMCA for Norton students. All participants must be YMCA members. This is a state-licensed program that begins at 7:00am and runs until the beginning of the school day.


YMCA School Age After School

Boys and Girls grades 1 to 6
The Cheshire Community YMCA also provides after school care for all elementary school children at our four state-licensed sites. Activities include homework help, arts and crafts, recreational games, indoor and outdoor play. Our after school programs run at Doolittle, Chapman, Norton and Highland Schools. After care begins at school dismissal time and runs until 6pm. Limited spaces are available, please call for information. All participants must be YMCA members.


YMCA School Age Before & After School

Boys and Girls grades 1 to 6
A combination of the above two programs to help our working parents who need extended care both in the mornings and the afternoons. Available for Norton and Highland students. All participants must be YMCA members.


Darcey Kinder Pals

For children enrolled in Darcey Kindergarten
This program is custom designed for Darcey School students. We offer a quality program for the part of the day that your child is not in school. We provide before and after care for Darcey morning Kindergarten, and we also provide mid-morning and late afternoon care for afternoon Kindergarten. We have theme months, craft projects, snack time, games, gym play and a whole lot more. This program is held every school day at the Cheshire Community YMCA. Vacation Fun Days

Boys and Girls grades K-7
When school is out, the YMCA is a great place for your children to spend the day! Activities include field trips, arts and crafts, gym and outdoor games. Your child will need to bring a lunch each day. Fundays for grades K-2 are held at the Cheshire YMCA, Fundays for grades 3-7 will be held at Norton School.
