Family

Today's families face challenging issues. While addressing these issues, the fundamental needs of families remains the same: healthy relationships, effective communication skills, tools to be self-supporting and extra resources in times of crisis. Recognizing these needs, the YMCA offers programs and services that help families build upon their strengths in a safe and welcoming environment.

In the United States, parents spend an average of 39 minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their children. Meanwhile, children spend an average of 1,331 minutes watching television, a yearly average of 1,154 hours (they spend 900 hours a year in school). Finding just a few hours for family time can be a serious challenge. At the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA, we provide opportunities for you to spend quality time participating in fun activities that encourage open communication with your children.

The Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs Adventure Guides program has been going strong throughout the fall and winter. Some of the events that Y-Adventure Guides have done include their Fall Campout, Family Night at the Gymnastics Center and an annual Holiday Party. On top of all their special events, each family circle has also been meeting and doing activities on a monthly basis. Some of our upcoming events are:

  • Sledding at Sloper in January
  • Fishing Derby in April
  • Second Annual Sloper Regatta in June
  • Family Weekend Campout in June

The Y-Adventure Guides parent-child program provides families a chance to share new experiences, develop mutual trust and grow closer to each other. This volunteer run program combines the fun and adventure of nature with the YMCA's Character Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. A parent/child (ages 3 and up) pair or an entire family can join to experience quality time together and to meet other families.

It's never too late to join our Parent-Child Program.
